State of Bewilderment

Posted by

Strange subject for a blog about stingersuits but from last week’s ‘State of Euphoria’ blog, I now find myself in a sad ‘state of bewilderment’.

Unless you’ve just landed from another planet or been hiding under a rock, you will no doubt have heard of the numerous terrorist attacks that have dotted the globe.

Normally I try to avoid social commentary on political / sensitive subject matters however it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep my mouth shut.

For the past while, daily we hear of atrocities, savage knife attacks, road rage, shootings, police killings and vicious assaults. Thrown into the mix, almost monthly there is a terrorist attack of some description somewhere in the world; lately weekly! How the hell did we get to this point?

A 2003 study by Jeffrey Record for the US army counted 109 definitions of the word terrorism. Wikipedia defines it as: ‘terrorism is, in its broadest sense, the use or threatened use of violence in order to achieve a political, religious or ideological aim. In modern times, terrorism is considered a major threat to society and therefore illegal under anti-terrorism laws in most jurisdictions. It is also considered a war crime under the laws of war when used to target non-combatants, such as civilians, neutral military personnel, or enemy prisoners of war.[1]

Neil and I often talk about our youth and the first time we went out to clubs or bars and how relatively ‘tame’ it all was. In fact, back then, there were no big burly security personnel on the door, drink spiking or gutless thugs ‘coward punching’ innocent victims. Yes, there were fights, but they were one on one, ‘clean’ and when you were down, the winner walked away, none of this brutality of continually kicking and punching til your victim is senseless.

For the most part we got along with one another, tolerated our differences and enjoyed ourselves. I find it alarming and frightening that within 2 or 3 decades we have gone from that wonderful, carefree lifestyle to one of apprehension, prejudice and fear. How did such violence become an accepted part of our lives now? I don’t have the answers, I wish I did.

Here are a couple of quotes I would like to share with you:

“Tolerance is giving to every other human being every right that you claim for yourself”

Robert Green Ingersoll (1833 -1899)

“Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength”

Dalai Lama

When a child is born into the world, they don’t know hate, bigotry or racism. Sadly, these things are learned. I reckon if EVERYONE taught their children love, respect and tolerance, the world would be a far better place for ALL of us. The youth are our future, I hope and pray they can get us back on the right path!

On a cheerier note, as the sages advise, don’t let them win, don’t live your life in fear. Be careful of course but live, love, laugh and play. Set an example for our children and bring sunshine back into our lives!

Grab one of our brightly colored stinger suits, shout out and safely enjoy the beauty of our world!
